Overview

ARTIS Gallery is pleased to present Metamorphosis, a new exhibition of sculpture by Christchurch-based artist Matthew Williams.

Working in bronze and serpentine, Williams explores the fundamental relationship between form, movement and material. His distinctive abstract sculptures are characterised by strong lines, sweeping curves and a sense of dynamic tension, transforming solid materials into forms that appear to twist, unfold and move through space.

Drawing on his background in architecture, design and bronze casting, Williams brings together natural stone and cast bronze to create works that balance strength with fluidity, with each sculpture inviting a different reading of form.

Metamorphosis reflects Williams’ ongoing exploration of transformation: how weight, structure and material can be reshaped into something that feels unexpectedly fluid and alive.

Matthew Williams has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand, with his work held in private collections in New Zealand, the UK, Canada and Dubai, as well as in the collection of The Kauri Museum. He established Crucible Arts, a specialist bronze casting foundry in Christchurch, in 2013.
