Exhibition Text

John Blackburn’s practice traced a bold trajectory between New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Born in Bedfordshire, England, he trained in textile design during the 1950s before relocating to New Zealand, where he emerged as one of the most uncompromising abstract painters of his generation. Working in Auckland, Blackburn developed a radical visual language that drew the attention of influential figures including Colin McCahon and entrepreneur Les Harvey, who recognised his exceptional talent and supported his return to London in 1961. In Britain, Blackburn’s lyrical abstractions—characterised by reduced forms and pure, resonant colour—found a receptive audience within the progressive art scene. A rediscovery of his work in the early 2000s led to renewed international interest, including a major retrospective and exhibitions at Osborne Samuel Gallery, London.

After returning to New Zealand in 2008, Blackburn continued to innovate, producing powerful mixed-media works that expanded his distinctive abstract vocabulary. His practice encompassed oil and mixed media on canvas alongside unconventional materials such as burnt metal and slate, unified by an enduring exploration of form and colour.

Exhibiting with ARTIS Gallery since 2009, Blackburn’s work remains a vital contribution to New Zealand’s modern art history, with a legacy that continues to resonate internationally. ARTIS Gallery are proud to present a number of previously unseen works in this exhibition. These works, recently released from the artist’s estate, continue to honour his artistic legacy.
