Artist Statement: "Any explanation of Pōneke Poetic may be inadequate because of its contradictory interplay and like poetry there is a lot of lateral thinking and Wellington boundaries don’t get adhered to. Times periods mix. The origins of the work may be my black singlet figures of the 1970’s, while for me Katherine Mansfield has surfaced previously. Various triggers for this work include a poetry magazine called SPORT, work illustrating Glenn Colquhoun’s Joe Taihape poem [and a forth coming comic]. Also contributing was my illustrating ‘Myths and Legends of the Pākeha’ by Glenn Colquhoun. Katherine is mentioned by Colqhoun in relation to a sport team. The poets on the reverse of the plank figure may be just as significant on their own terms."
