Holding his first exhibition in 1963 Don Driver is not slowing his
exhibition schedule yet, having exhibited in the South Island this year
he now follows this up with an exhibition at ARTIS Gallery.
As the title of this exhibition suggests there is a mixture of
works with a degree of formal elements to them but these are cleverly
juxtaposed against assemblage works for which Driver is well known.
Incorporating a diverse range of materials ranging from aeroplane
struts to duck decoys Driver illustrates that at 75 he still packs a
punch with his exhibitions.
Utilising the proliferation of colourful imagery that we are surrounded
with Driver has created wall-mounted pieces from Playstation covers.
Referencing works with similar formal concerns from the 1970's when he
used paint and aluminium to convey his ideas he is now drawing from his
contemporary environment of grandchildren's toys and video store
promotional material. |
