| Peter Nicholls’ recent sculpture makes connections between natural cyclic energies, cultural ecologies and memory.
This exhibition, As it is on Earth II, focuses on environmental imbalance and the recovery of native species. A series of etched shield-shaped plates showing the forms of endangered birds hang from the walls. The burnished steel and etched images produce a “living play” of light and shadow directly onto the wall surface.
Additionally, Irish Yew has been added to Nicholls’ palette - its symbolic connection with transformation and rebirth, making its use appropriate and poignant. The carvings depict scenes from the wheel of life; bird as hunter and hunted, man as destroyer and preserver.
A large abstract work, Withstand, forms the centrepiece, its title denoting nature’s strength in the face of human destruction. This exhibition follows on from the exhibition As it is on Earth I which was shown in Dunedin in 2011.
