Outside Inside: Sculpture Exhibition
12 June - 2 July

Inside – Outside currently showing at ARTIS Gallery is a collection of works by well known New Zealand sculptors – John Edgar, Richard Mathieson, Marte Szirmay and Jim Wheeler.

John Edgar: With quiet elegance John Edgar’s work sits solemnly waiting to be warmed by human contact. Edgar has been exhibiting in solo exhibitions since 1979 and his sculpture can be seen in public places throughout New Zealand, for example in the Auckland Domain and Brick Bay Sculpture Trail. Edgar works in Italian marble and glass, Coromandel granite, Indian limestone and Serpentine.

Richard Mathieson: Mathieson has exhibited widely in New Zealand dealer and public galleries and has undertaken commissions for public spaces in Auckland, including Auckland Botanic Gardens and Orewa College. His work is also exhibited at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail.

Marte Szirmay: Born in Hungary, Szirmay came to New Zealand in 1957. She has been exhibiting since 1969 and her work can be viewed in public and private collections throughout New Zealand, Australia, USA and Europe. One of Szirmay’s works, a large aluminium sheet sculpture - Smirnoff, is currently on display in Newmarket, Auckland.

Jim Wheeler: Wheeler’s botanist background has a strong influence on his work. Environmental issues and how plant communities evolve, continue to inform Wheeler’s sculptural practice. He has been exhibiting for over 30 years and his commissioned works can be found in public spaces such as the Auckland Botanical Gardens, Brick Bay Sculpture Trail and in private collections throughout New Zealand.
