Julie Firth graduated from the University of California Magna Cum Laude with a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television in 1988. She is currently the Director of the Master of Fine Arts programme at Whitecliffe College of Art & Design in Auckland, New Zealand.
Julie Firth has exhibited in New York at the Intuitiveye Gallery, La Strada Gallery in Los Angeles and The Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. The Corcoran Gallery is the oldest privately owned gallery in the United States. Firth’s artistic process is deeply subjective with a strong narrative element running through her images that can be read from a feminist perspective. Firth utilises the language of visual symbols to explore issues of universal concern such as love/hate, guilt/innocence, longing/loathing.
Firth often uses herself as subject in her photographs adding her own theatrical backdrop of props to explore these issues. The artist works on a large scale with some works up to 3 meters long which enhances the rich, textural element and heavy saturation of colour.
All processing and printing is done by Firth herself using alternative techniques she has developed to achieve the colour saturation she desires.
Julie Firth is represented in the Corcoran Museum of Art Collection in Washington, D.C. in the United States as well as several private collections throughout New Zealand and the United States.
